Screw conveyors & screw conveyors
Screw conveyors - also known as screw conveyors - are the ideal solution for the continuous, safe and low-emission transportation of a wide variety of materials. Whether finest powder, grainy granules, moist slurries or highly viscous, pasty masses: As the heart of countless process engineering processes, screw conveyors have proven themselves worldwide thanks to their robustness and versatility.
SEGLER offers you over 100 years of experience in mechanical engineering and develops customized and extremely durable solutions for you that are precisely tailored to your conveyed goods and your area of application.
Advantages and applications of screw conveyors
- Extremely versatile application options
- Conveying of classic bulk materials such as powders, granulates, pellets and chips (e.g. in the food, plastics and chemical industries).
- Reliable transportation of difficult, demanding media such as sticky sewage sludge, abrasive scale, ash-containing dusts or moist, pasty masses.
- Safe handling of recycling and waste materials such as shredded plastic waste, sawdust or filter cake.
- Realization of special applications in extreme temperature ranges, such as the cryogenic transport of frozen bacterial cultures from liquid nitrogen.
- Product protection and environmental safety through a closed system
The dust-, water- and optionally gas-tight transport reliably protects the conveyed goods from contamination by the environment (e.g. moisture, dirt). At the same time, the closed system protects the environment and employees from emissions such as dust, odors or gas leaks, which increases occupational safety and ensures compliance with environmental regulations. - Precise dosing and control of the material flow
The direct proportionality of screw speed and delivery rate enables volumetrically exact and constant delivery. Ideal for dosing applications for precise feeding of mixers, reactors or filling systems. Can often dispense with expensive and complex pre-dosing devices, thus simplifying the entire process setup. - Durable and low-maintenance design
Minimal mechanical wear on the screw conveyors, as the screw shaft is the only large moving part that runs primarily in the product itself and has no direct, abrasive contact with the housing. Significantly reduced maintenance compared to chain conveyors, where chain links, pins and guides are subject to high, constant wear. This results in high operational reliability and a long service life. - High efficiency and energy-efficient operation
The direct power transmission from the drive to the conveyed product ensures very efficient conveying with minimized slippage between the product and the screw flight. Significantly lower energy consumption per conveyed ton compared to pneumatic conveying systems, which have to compress and move large volumes of air in an energy-intensive manner. This results in lower operating costs and a better CO2 balance.
Highest safety and hygiene standards
- ATEX certification: Use of screw conveyors up to Zone 20 (dust-hazardous) or Zone 0 (gas-hazardous) – including economical nitrogen inerting.
- Food & pharmaceutical standards: Finely ground product contact surfaces, FDA-compliant PTFE seals, TSE/BSE and ADI free, no product-contacting screws or bearings.
- Chemical resistance: Surfaces in contact with the product can be coated or equipped with WCR hardfacing welded screw shafts. SEGLER offers the particularly economical beaded coating.
Special designs & functions
- Adapted screw geometries for special tasks
Depending on the material to be conveyed and the process objective, we adapt the geometry of the screw flights precisely in order to integrate additional functions:- Window thread: Specific recesses in the screw flight ensure improved material exchange and counteract bridging and clumping, resulting in effective self-cleaning.
- Paddle thread: Adjustable paddles on the screw shaft make it possible to mix the material intensively during transportation. The angle of the paddles can be adjusted to control the dwell time and mixing effect.
- Hollow blades (tempering screws): The screw shaft and/or the screw blades are hollow in order to allow a temperature control medium (e.g. water, steam, thermal oil) to pass through. This enables the material to be heated or cooled directly during transportation.
- External thread serration: A special toothing on the outer diameter of the thread acts as a scraper and cleans the trough of adhering, hygroscopic or pasty residues, which minimizes caking.
- Multi-shaft technology for maximum performance
For demanding conveying tasks, we use twin or multi-shaft intermeshing screws in our screw conveyors. This design massively increases the volumetric conveying capacity to Three to four-digit cubic meters per hour. Due to the intermeshing of the screw blades, the shafts clean each other, which considerably improves the transportation of highly adhesive goods or goods that tend to bridge. - Extreme heat resistance for thermal processes
Our screw conveyors can be used for continuous operation at extreme temperatures of up to +850 °C can be designed. Typical applications are ash cooling screws under fluidized bed or boiler systems. This is achieved by using highly heat-resistant stainless steels, special alloys and wear-resistant armoring for the screw blades. - Guaranteed system tightness for sensitive processes
For processes that run under positive or negative pressure, we design our screw conveyors to be absolutely pressure-tight. We realize designs that are pressure-tight up to +1.0 bar (overpressure) and, in the event of an explosion, pressure shock resistant up to 15 bar are. This ensures maximum process reliability, even when transporting critical or hazardous media. - Defined system termination for process separation
To prevent gas exchange between different process stages, the discharge area of the screw conveyor can be specifically sealed. This can be achieved either mechanically via a Stowage flap possible or process-related due to a Complete product filling at the outlet, where the conveyed material itself acts as a gas-tight plug.
Typical application examples
- Silo discharge screws without pre-dosing
- Sand washing classifiers & floating sink stages in recycling
- Scale transport in steelworks possible with SEGLER screw conveyor
- Frozen bacterial cultures for yogurt production
- Ash discharge in thermal recycling plants
